ECO PIONEERS:  Battersea based Delphis Eco launch what they believe to be the UK's first entirely recycled plastic packaging.

British eco cleaning-chemical manufacturer, Delphis Eco, have created a second life for single use plastic by pioneering, what they believe to be a world first - 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic packaging. The new packaging launches across their full range during Recycle Week (September 25th - 29th).

In an era that sees our world awash with plastic waste, Delphis Eco have challenged the international manufacturing status quo. Delphis Eco are working with the UK’s leading waste collectors to produce recycled plastic granules from HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) plastic, which will form its new 100% PCR packaging.

Additionally, with relentless determination, Delphis Eco has partnered with specialist producers to blow its bottles achieving the unique 100% food grade quality PCR level. The result – a long-awaited ‘closing the loop’ breakthrough in the use of HDPE recycled waste.

This signals the onset of a new standards where manufacturers and consumers can expect to see a shift in how waste is recycled and more importantly, how it subsequently enters the supply chain.

Furthermore, the new Delphis Eco packaging looks great, is totally robust and has been declared entirely ‘fit for purpose’ following rigorous tests to ensure its suitability and durability.

CEO, Mark Jankovich, says:

“It has taken five years to get to this point, and the journey is just beginning when it comes to creating a movement to increase the world’s level of recycling from between 5% - 7%, to 10% and beyond. Our breakthrough is showing the world that there can be a second life for single use plastic. The fantastic benefits are an immediate reduction in what goes into the ocean, landfill or is burnt.

“And if we, as a relatively small player, can bring this 100% PCR packaging to the UK market – why can’t the big players!

“By driving this change to our packaging – which incidentally, many people said couldn’t be done - we have taken 500 tonnes of carbon emissions out of the equation. Just imagine if the large, international brands followed suit. Waste plastic is a huge issue and we are still only scratching the surface at finding a solution of how to get rid of it.

“Consumers are ready to realign their purchasing habits and we are seeing an increase in high profile campaigns to drive awareness and change – Sky Oceans and ZSL, to name a few”.

“Right now - big corporates and government are behind the curve. The issue needs to be embedded high on their agendas to realise that consumers want recycled / up-cycle plastics, and to drive, through legislation if necessary, a shift in the manufacturing approach to ensure a closed loop supply cycle.

Media headlines have been dominated with distressing pictures of ocean plastic and the destruction this has caused to the environment and to marine wildlife, which inadvertently consumes plastic and subsequently returns into the food chain.

Jankovich continues:

“The unpalatable facts remain that over 500 million plastic bottles are used globally EACH day. The UK consumes 38 million plastic bottles per day. Only 5% to 7% of virgin plastic is recycled, which means that at least 93% goes to landfill, gets burned or lands up in the sea where it takes over 450 years to biodegrade. It is estimated that over 8 million tonnes of plastic is dumped into the ocean each year – a dump trucks worth per minute. The problem
is mounting and collectively, we have to take responsibility.

“We believe everyone has the obligation to be more sustainable and for the last 10 years have produced the UK’s most accredited eco cleaning range for the commercial cleaning and out of home sectors. Now, with the world’ first PCR 100% packaging, we hope that big international corporates will sit up and take note by embracing the responsibility to invest in and drive a paradigm shift on how we recycle plastic and use PCR waste.”

After years of not taking no for an answer Delphis Eco has closed the loop by working with our customers, waste collectors, recyclers and bottle blowers to create the UK’s first 100% PCR bottle.

We are a leading innovator and manufacturer of ecological cleaning products however packaging is a significant part so believe it’s our duty to challenge and innovate all inputs and are delighted to have created a 100% PCR bottle.

Only 5% of the world’s 300million tons of virgin plastic made each year is recycled. 8million tons gets dumped into our oceans each year which is a huge environmental issue and everybody’s concern. Most of the UK’s plastic is either incinerated, or sent to China or India for recycling, before being returned as low grade plastic, unsuitable for consumer products.

We’ve seen limited edition reclaimed-ocean-plastic bottles from big brands which is fantastic. Sadly however, Unilever, Coke, Proctor & Gamble etc have only committed to increasing the PCR content in their packaging to up to 30%, and over many years.

We’ve closed the loop by having our customers plastic waste collected, refined, re-blown and sold back for reuse, all in the UK.

This circular-economy innovation serves several key goals;

  • 70% reduction in carbon versus using virgin plastic

Delphis Eco have made truly sustainable and award winning cleaning chemicals for 10years. By switching to 100% PCR we expect to save 440 tones of carbon a year! WRAP calculated that bottle-to-bottle recycling saves 1tonne of CO2 per tone of plastic recycled.

Sustainability has always been a key part of Cookery School at Little Portland Street's ethos. Since 2003, the school's founder Rosalind Rathouse, has been inspiring and teaching students how to cook good food with confidence using her principle-led teaching approach that provides sustainable learning.

Cookery School at Little Portland Street was runner-up for" Most sustainable Cookery School" in the UK Cookery School Awards 2014 - no mean feat for a central London location - and has a three star rating from the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA), making them the most sustainable cooking school in London.

Although there has been an industry wide move toward improving sustainability, Rosalind believes the catering sector is moving far too slowly when it comes to adopting sustainability practices. 

Cookery School at Little Portland Street has always focused on minimising the impact on the environment by recycling all waste, using renewable energy and sourcing local and seasonal produce where possible.

In an effort to become even more sustainable, Cookery School at Little Portland Street realised that they needed to adopt a more eco-friendly way of cleaning so they made the switch to Delphis Eco, the leading manufacturer of ecological cleaning products in the UK.

Rosalind was impressed that the range of Delphis Eco's products were not only very effective but also carbon neutral, non-scented and that the bottles are refilled and diluted from concentrate at a central dosing station in the kitchen.

New plant-based cleaning products slash emissions at Rendall & Rittner
Residential managing agent Rendall & Rittner has revealed it is using new plant-based cleaning solutions across its 44,000 London units as a way to reduce product use, lower emissions and improve financial savings.

Rendall & Rittner will use plant-based sanitisers and multi-purpose cleaners from ecological cleaning company Delphis Eco to reduce annual emissions by 477 tonnes – the carbon equivalent of circumnavigating the world 330 times.

The product range – which has been awarded with two Royal Warrants – will be incorporated across all London units after a successful pilot scheme at three of the company’s developments. As well as the aforementioned carbon savings, the new partnership will see the number of different cleaning products used by staff fall by 40%.

Rendall & Rittner’s director Catherine Riva said: “This project has enhanced our approach to sustainability, not just through our company but across our supply chain. We wanted to make our suppliers aware of the products and show them the benefits of going green. This successful partnership has shown that we can play a proactive role in managing sustainable developments by asking those we work with to follow our lead.”

As well as using the cleaning products on-site the company has also mandated its supply chain to use the product, with one supplier revealing annual savings of £6,000 as a result of the switch. In total, Rendall & Rittner believe that the products could reduce chemical spend and save customers £50,000 each year.

The products are designed to reduce the amount of packaging and transportation required to move large quantities of the plant-based cleaning chemicals. Delphis Eco delivers a box of two, five litre products compared to 55 boxes of six trigger spray products. The change in delivery saves 332 bottles and uses 54 less deliveries – leading to carbon savings of 331.84kgs.

Delphis Eco’s chief executive Mark Jankovich added: “All of our products are shipped in concentrate form to reduce transport and carbon miles. But that’s the tip of the iceberg when it comes to sustainability. This project with Rendall & Rittner is a great example of one company influencing their supply chain to make that green step change. It has forged the way for other FM companies to use ecological products and we would love to see more companies taking the lead.”

Planting the concept

A new pilot scheme between the two companies will be established later this year as a means of introducing residents and the developments to the products. Refill stations for the plant-based cleaners will be provided on site.

The use of plant-based resources has usually been reserved for a plastic replacement or as biofuels. Both Tetra Pak and Coca-Cola have been pioneering plant-based packaging as a means to lower carbon emissions and reduce the amount of plastic waste produced.

With the use of biofuel in vehicles still up for debate, the cleaning and residential sector could potentially become a primary source for plant-based liquids to be utilised as a means to lower emissions.
